Her mother killed mine. Seles was told that it was merely spite, brought on by the fact that my mother had and didn't want what she wanted and could never have. Which might have played into it, had my mother been her actual target.

Seles has believed that for a long time, and I let her, because...all knowing the truth has done is hurt her. Nothing positive has come from her learning that her mother's true intent...was to kill me.

Where did her intent come from? You must have been young. Most motives wouldn't apply to someone that age.

If she killed me, then that would have allowed Seles to inherit my position as the Chosen, since she was the next blood relative of the previous Chosen...our father.

The Chosen...is essentially the one who would save their world when it is in decline. There is fame and something of a celebrity status attached to the position. Aside from that, the Chosen has a lot of power in the government.

I'm really not sure what she thought would come of passing that title to Seles, although I doubt she realized what the end result would have been.

Which would have been what? The position seems a coveted one. Any downside to it would have to be substantial to outweigh the perks.

Death. The journey to save the world ends with the Chosen sacrificing themselves.

Then again, I'm also sure she didn't know that the true point of the entire religion was for Mithos to find a new vessel for his sister's soul, in order to revive her. So had Seles become the Chosen and completed her journey (and assuming she didn't die during it), her spirit would have died, and Mithos would have attempted to use her body for that purpose. More than likely, it would have failed as every other attempt made in the last four thousand years had, and then the process would have repeated with another Chosen.

Yet her mother failed to remove the obstacle standing in her daughter's way, leaving you to your...position.

So she did. She really only had one chance, I suppose...when my mother was caught in her line of fire, she was restrained almost immediately.

Restrained...and punished? The girl grew up without her, I imagine.

She was executed, yes. Seles has been at the Abbey ever since.
