I'm sure you will all be delighted to hear that I have (mostly) recovered. The flu seems to have run its course, and I was finally able to return to work today.

Also, Sieghard has yet another ribbon to his illustrious name. He took Best of Breed at the AKC National Championship on Sunday.

No. I find beauty pageants rather repulsive, personally. There is a world of difference between perfection and good health, and what usually ends up in such spectacles. I mean only that the concept itself is vaguely similar. Very vaguely.

I was under the impression that breeding is supposed to be about breeding the healthiest animals possible.

It is. In the case of dogs, they're bred for specific purposes; Sigi's breed was originally developed as a herding breed. They're designed to do that job, and they must fit certain standards of height, length, and other specifications that serve that job.

Of course, they must be fed well and given routine medical and preventive care to be in perfect health. The slightest flaw in breeding or care can bring failure in competition.
