I'm sure you will all be delighted to hear that I have (mostly) recovered. The flu seems to have run its course, and I was finally able to return to work today.

Also, Sieghard has yet another ribbon to his illustrious name. He took Best of Breed at the AKC National Championship on Sunday.

This was actually his first time at the AKC. He's been in quite a few national shows, but nothing on this level. It is indeed an accomplishment.

I don't think I've ever been to a dog show. What does he have to do?

It's a competition for the dogs that best fit the ideal attributes of their breed. The judge studies the dog carefully, checks the gait and different parts of the body such as the shape of the head, and looks for overall health and perfection. A great deal of work goes into just getting a dog ready for the few minutes it's being viewed by the judge.

...He's very well trained, but the competition isn't about tricks. It's about breed standards and animals that are as close to physical perfection as possible.

The AKC does sponsor agility and obedience competitions, though.
