[RL 6: We are the Champions - Edgeworth only][Backdated]

((OOC: Taking place after the AKC/Eukanuba Championship on Sunday.))

The apartment was dark when he arrived home that evening. They had left the AKC Championship late in the afternoon, and the drive had been a long one. Edgeworth flicked on the light in the foyer and let Sigi's leash fall from his fingers. A small smile spread across his face as he watched the dog bounce eagerly out of the ring of light and into the living room.

The curtains over the balcony door were still closed; Edgeworth crossed the room to open them, opened the door and stepped out into the crisp air. Sigi followed, nuzzling his hand gently with a cold, wet nose. It felt surprisingly good on his warm skin; the fever had returned while he was at the show, a frustrating (and somewhat worrying) development considering how long he had already been ill.

It was getting colder as the last of the daylight faded. The air drew a chill up his spine, even as it soothed the fever's heat. It was detrimental to be standing out there, he knew, but he couldn't quite tear himself away from the refreshing breeze until Sigi nudged his hand again, demanding. Edgeworth allowed himself one last look at the newly awakening stars over the rooftops before patting the dog's head and returning to the warmth of the living room.

"Sigi, komm," he called as he sat on the couch, and his pet (well-trained and always eager to please) plopped to the floor in front of him, his ears perked forward and tail wagging across the thick carpet.

"You did well today, but you can always do better. Next time I expect Best in Class." He pointed and Sigi stilled immediately, intense brown eyes focusing on his face. Edgeworth regarded him sternly for a moment, then allowed another small smile to break through.

"Still, you behaved as a champion behaves, and for that you are to be rewarded." A small box was drawn from the depths of one of his coat pockets, and a dog biscuit from the other. He set the biscuit on the couch (Sigi eyed it intently, but didn't move) and opened the box. Inside was a collar, a thick one of gleaming brown leather, edged in black. It almost resembled fine saddle leather, and the name 'Sieghard' was etched into a brushed bronze plate on the top.

Sigi remained still as Edgeworth put the collar on and attached the old tags to it, but wagged his tail again as soon as Miles leaned back.

Pampering the dog was a habit Edgeworth never meant to fall into. He was, in fact, perfectly aware of how ridiculous it was; Sigi didn't care what sort of collar he had, or how expensive his toys were. But Edgeworth had found himself in too many upscale pet stores, eying too many items that would be perfect... Sigi did seem to enjoy the attention, at any rate. And any pet of Miles Edgeworth's should be a pet with a certain style.

'Lovers or pets. The two things in the world most likely to turn an otherwise reasonable man into a fool.' Miles shook his head and examined the collar critically. "It was only supposed to be for special occasions," he mused aloud, "but one must always look his best." Edgeworth set the old collar on the coffee table and grabbed the biscuit from the couch. "Sigi, gib fuß."

A perfectly executed 'Shake' was the response, and Sigi accepted his treat eagerly, crunching it quietly while Edgeworth rose, hung his coat, and walked down the hall to his office, turning on lights as he went.

The screen was in standby mode, but he knew exactly how many windows would be there when he turned it back on. His time at home over the past week had at least given him the opportunity to catch up on his backlog, but only a relentless pace had allowed him to make significant headway. And while he'd never admit it to Wright or any of the others, it was taking its toll.

Flu headaches and muscle pains were multiplied by the time spent at his computer, so much so that he'd begun to do what he could on his laptop, propped up in bed on numerous pillows. (Several times he'd started this way, only to be woken up several hours later by the laptop shutting off as its battery died, erasing any work he'd managed to complete. It only took two instances before he stopped working in bed altogether, except when the aches made his computer chair unbearable.)

It was almost done, though. He was close to the end, perhaps a day or two if he maintained his pace and worked through most of tonight.

'Whatever does not kill you...'

Edgeworth froze, already halfway to the computer. The thought sent ice creeping down his spine. It had been one of the unspoken, understood rules of the von Karma household; strive, and strive, and if you survive, perfection will be forged through the process.

If you don't survive, you weren't worthy to begin with.

Edgeworth licked suddenly dry lips, made it to his desk. One slender-fingered hand rested on the chair's leather and he stared at the screen. He wondered if Quatre was on, or Maraich...or Wright, maybe, waiting for him to post just so he could nag him to leave, to get some sleep.

I'm not doing this because I think you're incapable. I'm doing it because you're my friend and I CARE about you!

They had been mere words on a screen, but he could almost hear Wright saying them. Frustration welled up, a dull burning in his chest that was quickly smothered by the overwhelming aches of every limb, every muscle, suddenly making themselves collectively known.

God, he was just...so tired.

A soft whine at the door. Sigi was watching him, head cocked quizzically in that way that only dogs have. He whined again, quietly, and turned his long head back toward the kitchen, then toward the bedroom. Edgeworth closed his eyes and ran a hand shakily through his hair. Even the bedroom seemed far away.

Finally, utterly defeated, he left the office.

[Edgeworth pampering Sigi is ridiculously cute! This was also really well written. Nicely done. <3]

[It is always nice to hear that people read your work, but at the same time don't stop writing if people don't! You know? Not that I was afraid you would, but it's great when people get this indepth into their characters and really care enough to actually write mini fics.

For me, it actually gave a lot of depth to a character that I'd only been introduced to through the Phoniex Wright games 1, and 2. (Not to say that Edge wasn't already sweet *_*, but seriously. <3<3 But yes, sorry, ramble.

And thank you! I'm really honored to hear that. :-) You know, I'm getting the DVDs in the mail soon and I'd be happy to try and upload season one for you to download, if you like. Both seasons are actually already online at www.alluc.org. : D ]

I know exactly what you mean. <3 I played Edgeworth for a little while, myself, so I understand how much of a thinker and inward person he is. <3 I thought you really went indepth and played into it nicely.

Honestly, I think you play him fabulously- down to the plum color of the journal. 8D Which is great, because he's such a wonderful, interesting character.

And haha, okay! <3 Good luck, then!

Ohhh naturally it'd be slow. :] I think that's the best approach. But I will watch for it, so, yay! <3 And Quatremun conspiring on this doesn't surprise me, lulz.

Fun is one way to put it.

ZOMG You pinged the muse. xD

What's nice is that they kind of have a weird, assumed connection with all of Phoenix's little "I believe in him! orz" attitudes and such <3. But it would be a little awkward I'd imagine, yes. 8D

Aha. ♥ Yes, I had to make a pointless comment.

Do you actually know German? o:

Oh, good. :D

Tch, good luck if you take it. Completely different and overall difficult to grasp once you step out of simple sentence structures.

But god, I hope by the time we rp the meeting my paragraph-RPing will be as awesome and in-depth as yours is again. It's hard to get back into the habit and keep it so interesting. j j

I love learning languages, but I couldn't do that. I can barely handle four hours. But good luck~. I wouldn't mind helping if you have questions though, and there's always [livejournal.com profile] learn_japanese. :]

Aw, thanks for the reassurance. ♥ But ahaha, a wonderful bonding experience indeed. (After all the angst and "ohgod, my chest hurts." XD) But srsly, I'm so excited about it~~ ♥

You're crazy then. ♥

Of course! (But I'm pretty sure Quatre's hands will shake so much half-way through he won't be able to enjoy the tea. At least he'll have tea in the beginning though.) Aha, what an upper class douche way to pick someone's brain apart. Over tea. XD

sdlkfa Maybe I should get that Thunder Bird because I keep forgetting to comment to certain threads. j j
