Unsurprisingly, actually. The condition was fairly common in the Pacific Northwest, circa the mid-1800s.

In much the same way that it accomplishes any of the other impossible or improbable feats that are attributed to it, I assume. This wasn't the first virus to begin with the community's victims awakening in a bizarre setting.
