59: Preparations are Underway

My workload has kept me mercifully occupied over the last two months. I've had very little free time to fill, and if it weren't for the efforts of the more enthusiastic among my co-workers (and the significant increase in property crimes), I may have succeeded in forgetting the season. What free time I've had has been devoted to preliminary planning for the community-wide law committee, which I shall be moving on shortly, and preparing Sigi for his upcoming challenges. This weekend marks the annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, and, thanks to the apparent resurgence of my immune system, it promises to be a more enjoyable experience than last year's. Sieghard's handler has been working with him extensively since his abduction, and neither of us has marked any residual effects which might be causes for concern; barring the presence of any hidden damage, Sigi's sure to excel as he did last year.

After extensive research, I've also managed to choose a local Schutzhund club, though finding one with sufficiently high standards has proven surprisingly difficult. Once Sigi's achieved his BH, I'll be enrolling him in the Schutzhund 1 training course. Any of you who might feel the urge to make unannounced and unwelcome visits to my apartment may consider this the single warning that the potential for liability requires me to give.

The recent marking of my first year here has also brought an additional concern to mind. It seems as if it's been some time since I've been personally treated to one of the viruses which used to affect me so frequently. Contrary to what one might expect, the thought is far from reassuring, and I've decided to take a precaution I should have taken long ago. In the past, Detective Gumshoe has served me in this capacity, but I'm unsure whether he still monitors the community. Additionally, entrusting only one person with this task heightens the risk of that one person being simultaneously incapacitated by whatever virus might affect me. If I'm...unable to be here for whatever reason, Sieghard must be taken care of.

Doing so should be a simple matter. While I'm sure it will come as a great disappointment to some of you, no actual contact with Sigi will be necessary. I've long had an arrangement with his trainer, and he'll be able to take charge of Sigi if he's ever notified that there's a need for it; all that will be required is a phone call or e-mail requesting that he pick Sigi up from my apartment. I'll be able to retrieve the dog and make payment once the virus' effects wear off.

Those of you who'd be willing to take on this role, respond here and I'll provide you with his trainer's contact information.

What's Schutzhund?

A test originally designed to keep the German Shepherd line strong. In Germany it still serves this purpose, but in this country it's become a sport for working dogs. It tests animals on the same skills required for police work.

Intense may be too mild a descriptor. The intelligence and strength Schutzhund dogs display in competition is nothing short of extraordinary, and the protection phase of the testing is particularly impressive. It's a challenging sport, but Sigi's performed admirably in his basic training. I have no doubts he'll eventually achieve Shutzhund level 3.

I'll admit the possibility hadn't crossed my mind until Jordan made the offer. As far as I know, he's able to perform the same alteration on any phone.

....Wow. I can't even imagine what it would be like to watch a dog doing that. Other than Sigi, most of the dogs I know are just...like, regular pets. They can sit and that's about it.

Hey, it doesn't hurt to be optimistic.

Man's apparently inherent bloodlust is an unavoidable fact, but our ability to suppress those baser urges is one of the things that separate us from lesser lifeforms. Enjoyment of Schutzhund should be based on the dedication and discipline of dog and trainer. It's reassuring to see at least some appreciate the sport for its more artistic aspects.

Personally, I prefer realism. My standards and expectations are high, and optimism increases the potential for disappointment.

I thought the coolest part was how well the dogs, like, listened to their trainers. I mean, if I want to see a German Shepherd biting somebody, I can just watch Cops.

I like to think it's possible to be optimistic and realistic at the same time, but I think I know better than to think I could change your mind about it, so~

Keep in mind the discipline of police dogs is equal to, if not well above, that of these Schutzhund dogs. What may appear to be aggression or violent tendencies is actually under the strict control of the handler. It's simply that few fail to note it because the apparent violence is far more sensational.

That would depend. In some cases, I'd trust the dog's judgment over its handler's.
