41: Double standards [Backdated]

A quiz, of sorts.

You are a highway patrol officer. On a sparsely occupied highway you see two vehicles exceeding the speed limit: a red sports car doing about 90mph, and a truck going at about 100mph.

Which car do you pull over?

The truck? It's going faster and it's bigger, so it'll do more damage if there's a crash. Then again, at that speed both of them would kill someone pretty easy.

You're expecting a high-speed pursuit? Either car you pull up behind is going to stop. The question here is 'Which one do I want to stop?'

I'm no driver, but I don't see how much of a difference ten miles makes when you're going that fast. They're both dangerously reckless.

Ten miles makes quite a bit of difference to a skilled enough driver.

Perhaps I'm a highly perceptive highway patrolman and recognize the greater skill in the person driving the black truck.

Is there a particular reason for choosing that one?

Faulty logic. By those standards, you could make the same argument for a highway patrolman pulling over a car doing 70 instead of a car doing 90.

Five miles over the speed limit is a little different than fifteen, but I see what you're saying. I concede defeat.

You got a speeding ticket, didn't you?

Despite the fact that the other car is exceeding the speed limit by a larger margin?

What type of red sports car?

That would seem to be the logical answer, wouldn't it? Keeping in mind also that the flow of traffic on a California highway ranges from 65-85mph, despite the speed limit of 65mph.

Plus, guys in sports cars speed all the time. It's, like, normal--it's probably just another asshole in an expensive car. If a truck's going that fast, it's suspicious.

People also assume owners of red sports cars are the sort of people to drive said cars at excessive speeds. It's a mild form of profiling.
