[OOC: Hogwarts Virus Bio and Plotting Post]

Gathering up some info on Edgeworth for the upcoming virus! Please let me know if any of this seems off; it's been a loooong time since I read the books, and knowing my memory I'm sure I've forgotten a lot of the pertinent details. His history is lifted pretty directly from the AA games, so if any changes need to be made to mesh more accurately with the HP universe, let me know that too. 8D The information in his history may be known to some of the other faculty members, but I'm not expecting many of the students to have heard about his past.

This can also be used as a plotting post! If Edgeworth might have been well acquainted with your character from previous years' classes or incidents, we can discuss that here too.

House: Ravenclaw
Wand: 12”, holly, dragon’s heartstring
Familiar: Sieghard, a Belgian Tervuren dog
Teaches: History of Magic

History: Edgeworth is the only (and presumably, the last) member of a well respected line of pureblood witches and wizards. His parents made numerous philanthropic contributions to wizarding society, and his father, Gregory Edgeworth, was a valued employee of the Ministry of Magic.

Sadly, neither parent lived to see Miles grow up. Victoria Edgeworth passed away when Miles was quite young, a victim of a magical malady that was still incurable at the time, and soon after that, shortly before the fall of Voldemort, Gregory Edgeworth was murdered by Death Eaters.

Young Miles spent nearly a year in an orphanage, before being adopted by the head of the noble house of Von Karma. Manfred von Karma promised the boy a bright future in the Ministry of Magic, following not only in his father’s footsteps but in the footsteps of his new mentor as well. He was a diligent student, and backed by his mentor’s vast experience, substantial fortune, and intimidating reputation, he seemed well on his way to achieving the fate Von Karma had laid out for him.

Then a series of events that began with a murder and ended in a conviction put an end to Edgeworth’s ambitions. Thanks to an old friend, he was extricated from the dangerous situation he’d suddenly found himself in, but his budding career at the Ministry—and more importantly, the purpose he’d perceived for his life—were left uncertain. Questioning everything he’d been taught, he resigned from the Ministry and left England for parts unknown.

When he finally returned, secure in his newly discovered path and eager to reassume his responsibilities, he found yet another path had already been laid out for him. However, this time the choice to walk it was left up to him. Dumbledore’s offer of a teaching position at Hogwarts was immediately met with resistance; Edgeworth wasn’t ready to make yet another mistake by following anyone, no matter how noble their intentions may seem, and well…he’d never been very comfortable around children. Still, once he realized the full scope of the good he could accomplish in his new role, he had no choice but to accept. He joined the Hogwarts staff as one of the two History of Magic professors, and he’s been a devoted (albeit severely demanding) teacher ever since.

Teaching Method: The most important thing to remember about Edgeworth’s teaching method is that he demands of his students only what he demands of himself…which is to say he’ll accept nothing less than perfection. Anyone who can consistently deliver that will be an obvious favorite, mostly safe from his sharp reprimands. If a student can prove to him that they’re striving to at least do the best they can, they may still manage to fly under his finely-tuned radar, but students who display laziness, poor study habits, or who clearly value less important matters (like Quidditch) above his lessons can expect intense, frequent correctional tactics. These tactics may include detentions, extra classwork, and whatever other nefarious punishments he can come up with. And don’t make the mistake of expecting house favoritism. In Edgeworth’s eyes, a sin is a sin, and Ravenclaws are just as likely as anyone else to find themselves docked house points for bad behavior.

When it comes to lessons, Edgeworth has a tendency to be long-winded (lol understatement). He often barrages his students with information, but it’s clear he believes wholeheartedly in the importance of what he teaches. Students with a certain outlook on learning may find his obvious fascination with the subject matter a bit infectious.

Reading from the assigned textbooks is meant to be done outside of class, while most of the class’ time together is spent on discussions and lectures meant to gauge their understanding of the previous night’s material. Classwork involves weekly tests, most of which are involved and don't allow for multiple choice answers. Grading will not be done on a curve.

Personal Life: When not teaching his classes, Edgeworth spends much of his time alone, either in his (gaudily decorated, extremely pink) office, his chambers, or in one of his favorite haunts around the school. If his students need to find him most of them know to look in the library, where he spends most of his time, but he can also be caught wandering the grounds, lost in thought...or, on a few rare occasions, playing with Sigi in the Hogwarts Lake.

Speaking of Sigi, his familiar is his constant companion. The two are always seen in each other's company, and the Terv is always ready and eager to aid Edgeworth. In class, he often serves as a second pair of eyes, pacing slowly through the tables and bringing to Edgeworth's attention any shenanigans he may have missed. The only time one is ever seen without the other is when the large dog is off on some errand, such as delivering messages to other staff members or retrieving something from Edgeworth's quarters (which are, of course, as gaudily decorated as his office).

Outside of meals, Edgeworth rarely socializes. He almost never has the time or the inclination to engage others in conversation, but he will occasionally let himself be pulled into discussions with other teachers. On Saturdays, he takes tea with a few of his favorite students.
