[RL 13: Rude Awakening - Edgeworth only]
((OOC: Taking place at about 2a tonight.))
Almonds. The scent filled his nostrils again, sweet and cloying, overpowering even his dreams. He wrinkled his nose, endeavored to sink deeper into sleep, irritated at being dragged halfway to waking.
It worked for a while. The darkness welcomed him back, and he relaxed into it, blissfully and intentionally oblivious to the alarm that would be going off too soon, the cold apartment he'd be abandoning his bed for. The darkness was warm, free of thoughts and worries, and he let it envelop him, cling to him, growing heavier and tighter...
Wrong. Something wrong. Alarms, internal, not a ringing by his bed but a buzzing along every nerve. Something was hurting, burning, impossible to pinpoint in the bodiless state of sleep so he struggled towards the surface. The pain grew as he ascended, spread and split. The silence was broken by a sound he couldn't place, loud but distant, familiar if he could only focus, then a face swam into his vision and he realized his eyes were open wide, he was awake-
The pressure on his mouth and nose increased as the man's eyes narrowed, and he realized the source of the pain when the burn in his chest intensified. His hands were held firmly against the pillow far above his head, the stretch further tightening his lungs. He tugged desperately at them, struggled to twist or kick free, but despite the scream of protest from his right arm he was barely able to move. The angle was wrong, the man's positioning across his hips and legs was expert and his grip firm; Miles could feel his own strength ebb as the rudely broken haze of sleep gave way to the increasing fog of oxygen deprivation.
The man (too solid to be a ghost, too cold to be anything but) didn't grin, or gloat. His eyes were dark, narrowed but otherwise expressionless, his skin pale and glowing dimly in the shadowed bedroom. And he was familiar, frighteningly so though his identity was still out of reach. In the background Miles dimly registered Sigi's frantic barking, and he wondered if, after all that life had thrown at him, he was going to die without even knowing the reason. A ridiculous way to end.
Sigi's barking stopped as if cut off, and for a heart-stopping moment Miles feared something had happened to silence him. Then the cage rattled violently, again and again and suddenly the weight was gone from Miles' hips and wrists and cool air was flooding back into his lungs, reeking of ammonia and burning more than the deprivation had. The bed shook, hard, and he shot up just as Sigi nudged him. The dog whined and sniffed and sat perfectly still as Miles wrapped his arms around him and clung to his thick fur.
Once the scent faded Edgeworth was able to let go. His hand drifted to the phone, one number already running automatically through his head, and he stopped himself just before the knocking sounded from the foyer. Voices from the hall outside his front door, high and concerned. His nerves tingled uncomfortably as he crawled from his bed and threw on a robe.
He made sure Sigi was with him before he left the bedroom.
